It is easy to create a garden that is waterwise and environmentally friendly, yet full of colour, interest, and variety. All we have to do is to adopt the 6 Vital Principles. These are:
  • Reduce areas of lawn
  • Group plants according to their water needs
  • Use drought-tolerant plants
  • Maintain the garden
  • Use mulch
  • Water efficiently

The garden pictured is in an extremely dry area with unforgiving, rocky soil. It is on top of a hill but the house and garden are cleverly integrated and provide a haven from the dry winds. The water in the pond is pumped up from a dam down in the valley.
